Did you know that Jounalist around the world are under attack

The past year was a difficult one for journalists. The number of attacks and kidnappings of media workers soared. Carefully staged murders of reporters became all too common. And governments around the world increasingly used national security as an excuse to detain journalists and stifle criticism of their actions.

Some countries were more dangerous for journalists than others. The Middle East, and Syria in particular, was the worst place to be a journalist. China, Iran and Eritrea were among the countries that imprisoned the most journalists.

Freedom House says press freedom around the world is at its lowest level in a decade.

Inside Story takes a look at why the profession has got so dangerous, and what it will take to ensure journalists do their jobs safely.

WORLD NEWS:8 new planets found in 'Goldilocks zone'

The "Does human life exist beyond Earth" debate just scored another talking point with the discovery of eight new planets within the so-called "Goldilocks" -- or habitable -- zone of their stars. Astronomers with the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, or CfA, announced their findings at a meeting of the American Astronomical Society. To be considered habitable, exoplanets must orbit within a distance of their stars in which liquid water can exist on the planet's surface, receiving about as much sunlight as Earth. Hence the Goldilocks zone: Too much sunlight and the water would boil away as steam, too little, and the water would freeze. Among the eight, scientists say two are the most similar to Earth of any known exoplanets to date.

The All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Major-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), has assured Nigerians that all corrupt politicians will end up in jail once he is elected into power. Buhari, who gave the assurance on Tuesday during the APC rally and the presentation of the party’s flag to Umana Umana as its governorship candidate in Akwa Ibom State in Uyo, said he would block all loopholes through which money was being siphoned out of the country. “When we come into power, anyone who steals Nigeria’s money will end up in Kirikiri Maximum Prisons. We are going to make sure that Nigeria’s wealth belongs only to Nigerians,” he said. He decried the nation’s over-dependence on oil, saying the country would not have faced the current economic downturn if the country had invested in agriculture.
